Ok, I know that there nothing threatening about this Fortune Ice Cream sign outside of Square Books in Oxford, MS. Many of us long for the time when you could saunter up to the drug store counter for a cool scoop of strawberry ice cream on a hot summer day. No these things are not threatening in any form.

Now scan left. What is the interesting downward facing brown bubble? A new type of streetlight maybe? Nope. Compliments of Homeland Security and the City of Oxford we bring you cameras of the Square. And you might ask why we have these? To monitor traffic? To relay interesting time lapse footage of the Square to some artsy Oxford website? Wrong on all counts. No dear citizens these cameras are there to watch your comings and goings from Oxford’s Bars and Restaurants.

You’ve been told this is all for your safety, but don’t think these cameras can’t and won’t be abused. Big Brother is watching, you just didn’t think he would be your neighbor did you?

Next time you leave a business on the Square, look up and say Hi to Pat and the boys down at OPD. They’ll appreciate your neighborliness.
